Glen transforms his craft into pure theatre

Glen, 41 from Welling, has had a number of different jobs over the years that have included being a welder, a locksmith, a van and lorry driver and carpenter and joiner. Though his work has been varied throughout his working life, he has always hoped to find that spark of inspiration which would enable him to apply his practical skills to a more creative medium.

This week, Glen, along with his fellow students on the Production Arts Level 3 Diploma, are currently completing assignments and putting the finishing touches to their work before progressing to Rose Bruford College to study for a Scenic Arts (Construction, Props and Painting) BA (Hons) Degree.

Preparing himself for the full-time higher education programme beginning next September, Glen says: “It was only through attending a production at the Edward Alderton Theatre one evening that it suddenly occurred to me that I wanted to create stage sets, build props and paint scenery for theatre productions. I’d caught the theatre bug and this was the kind of environment I wanted to work in. I enquired about voluntary work at the theatre and was accepted. From there, I looked for a suitable course or training package that I could take to convert my very broad carpentry skills into a much more specialised field of expertise. I found this course on the College’s website and here I am.

“I’ve definitely found something that will lead on from where I have left off in my career so far and enable me to use previous experience and skills acquired long ago.

“Back in May, as part of the course, I did a two-week work experience programme at the Stratford East Theatre Royal. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and just before I left, I was asked if I’d like to work there as a casual employee. Obviously, and without a moment’s hesitation, I answered ‘yes’. I’ve recently finished working on a production of King Hedley starring Lenny Henry and Aaron Pierre.

“From here, I hope to continue working at the Stratford East Theatre as well as going full-throttle to achieve very highly on my degree. Coming back into education has been brilliant, it's been fairly tough at times and I have to do a lot of juggling my old life with the new, but as I say - just brilliant!”

Glen’s tutors Juliette and Ian have been amazed by his dynamism since starting the course back in September and have awarded him straight distinction grades for his complete set of assignments throughout the year. Both tutors have a wealth of experience in the film, tv and theatre sector and have worked very closely with all of the students to help them progress into higher education or directly into a job.

Glen added: “This course has completely changed my life - I wish I’d discovered it years ago.”
